“Make the most of what classics offers in terms of education, meeting people
and improving yourself. Get involved with the
various things on offer.”

Sam Broster

Course: BA Ancient History (second year)

“Nottingham’s open day was the main factor in my decision to come here. I was impressed by the talk given by the Department of Classics – it outlined the course and was very inspiring.

Another thing that appealed to me was the choice of modules, which is fantastic. The first year gives you the basics, which was important for me because I had only a partial knowledge of classics beforehand. It also helps you adapt to the demands of university work. In the second and third years, the modules available allow you to study exactly what interests you, be that art, history, literature or other areas.

The teaching of the modules has been my favourite part of the course – the way they are taught is entertaining but still informative. There is so much variety in both the teaching and the subject that it is always engaging. My favourite modules have been Greeks and Barbarians, and Classics and Popular Culture. In the latter, we learned about how the classics have influenced modern culture which was great fun. There isn’t really anything I haven’t enjoyed about my course!

The Classics Society (Classoc) organise social events, which are great for meeting people, and a trip to Rome, which is amazing fun and educational at the same time. I’ve also played football for Classoc and the Jumpers for Goalposts Society; and through a music society called Bandsoc, I’ve been able to continue drumming and play with other musicians.

My personal tutor has already talked to me about career options. He was able to give me a great deal of information and also pointed me in the direction of potential work experience and further information.

I definitely feel my degree has helped me to develop transferable skills, especially through group work and researching and writing essays. I feel that the Department is one of the best in the country for a reason, offering much more than simply an academic education.”
