“Look into studying abroad – it’s an amazing opportunity.”

Colette Sumpton

Course: MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (fourth year)

“I was attracted by the prospect of studying electrical and electronic engineering at Nottingham because the course had such good links with industry. I also liked the study abroad opportunities the course offered, especially at the Malaysia Campus. As well as this Nottingham is a great city to live in and the campus is really pretty, so I feel I get the best of everything.

Over the four years, I have developed a specific interest in software engineering and computer lectronics. The course is lecture based but I also enjoy the hands-on work we do in practical lab sessions, it really adds to the whole learning experience and makes what we’re taught in lectures come alive in a practical sense. Our lecturers are experienced, friendly and approachable and the facilities we have at our disposal include lots of different equipment and specialist software. On top of that we also take modules which specifically develop vocational skills such as report writing and presentation techniques.

I spent my third year at the Malaysia Campus. It was packed with different experiences and gave me a taste of different cultures and a different way of studying which has inspired me now that I’m back in Nottingham. While I was in Malaysia, I did a group project based on high-speed trains and how electrical engineering works in the real world. I really enjoyed it as it was industrially relevant and not only focused on the technical impact of engineering but also its wider global implications. I also enjoyed the group work where you can bounce ideas off each other. Overall it was incredible to be able to continue studying the same course and modules as you would have in Nottingham but also have the opportunity to travel and experience a different culture.”
