"Make sure you talk to
everyone you meet – it’s scary initially but
everyone is in the same boat, and the more
people you know the easier and more fun
the future years will be."
“It was the University’s reputation and the excellent career prospects that initially attracted me to Nottingham. Once I came to the open day and saw just how nice the campus was, I was sold.
The wide choice of modules means you have the opportunity to learn about anything from group theory to fluid mechanics. I’ve been able to study exactly what I want to study and build up a solid grounding for my specialisation in the third year, which is applied maths. It has allowed me to pursue my interests while at the same time teaching me core mathematical principles that are then applied in some of the later modules. I have also been very impressed with the quality of the lecturers – they explain things coherently and are always looking to be innovative in the way they present their material.
One of the things I have enjoyed most is learning the various techniques required to solve practical problems and seeing how mathematics can be used in the wider world – in modelling the spread of an epidemic, for example.
Although maths is hard work, there is more than enough time
to thoroughly immerse yourself at the University and really
enjoy your time here. I have been playing football for my hall
and the School for two-and-a-half years and am also an
active member of the Mathematics Society, which organises
social events for everyone in maths.
Careers-wise, I have attended several presentations and events by external companies both on and off campus. The links that Nottingham has with the top employers is fantastic – some of the biggest companies in the world will come to sell themselves to you. I did an internship between my second and third years, and as a result, have been offered a graduate position with KPMG in London.”
