"Do as many extra-curricular activities as you can because they make your university experience"

Ksenia Luchkova

Age: 21

Course: Economics (third year)

“Several things made me choose Nottingham – mainly the University’s ratings in The Times Higher Education league tables and its reputation for economics. I was very impressed by the University on the open day and liked the idea that I didn’t have to choose between a traditional campus and a vibrant city, as Nottingham offered both.

The course is really practical and you get to develop a range of practical skills that employers look for in a graduate. You’re also encouraged to look at what’s going on in the world. The wide range of modules means there’s a lot of flexibility and you can tailor your course to your preferences. Career opportunities for economics graduates are endless and the prospects of securing a prestigious graduate job after studying at Nottingham are excellent.

My course has given me an opportunity to meet lots of different people with similar interests but I’ve also joined some societies. In my first year, I did karate for the first time in my life, in the second year I was the treasurer of the club and now I’m the social secretary. I’ve made a really good group of friends through the society – university is all about trying different things.

Part of what makes Nottingham different is its traditional halls – having meals together creates a really good atmosphere and gives plenty of opportunities to make friends with students of other disciplines.

After I graduate, I’d like to work in consultancy first of all, and as I am also interested in financial markets, I see banking as a possibility. My course has really set me up for that because there are a lot of numerical modules and I’ve been taught to think critically about things. In our second year, we give presentations so that helps develop our communication and team work skills."
