"The key to a good time in Nottingham is work hard, play hard."
“I’m really glad I made the decision to come to Nottingham because the course is excellent. It’s designed so that in the first and second years, you consolidate your existing knowledge and improve it. Your year abroad is a huge, enjoyable learning curve that gives you the impetus to develop your skills, and in the fourth year, you really start to get the best out of the language.
One of my favourite modules is one that I’m doing at the moment – Interpreting and Translating. I’m also enjoying looking at contemporary Russian culture since the 1950s. Most universities offer 19th- and 20th-century literature modules but this one is a bit different, and really pushes you. Another good module is The Petersburg Text – Nottingham is one of very few universities to offer it. It’s all about how the myth of St Petersburg was created and it’s really interesting.
I’m impressed by the range of topics that the staff have covered. It really helps when you’ve got lecturers who know their subject areas inside out. The facilities are good too – the library has an in-depth section and the language centre has just been remodelled to include things like flat screen computers, DVDs and individual TV sets.
Looking at my course from an employer’s point of view, I’ve developed lots of useful skills, such as presentation and communication skills and the ability to work in a team and independently. The lecturers are always there if you have any problems, and the course helps you to grow as an individual.
The city itself is fantastic – I really feel part of a community here.”
