Course: Medicine (third year)

“Lots of things attracted me to Nottingham. It was a mix of the teaching style, the campus and the Students’ Union, which seemed very active.

I definitely made the right decision. At Nottingham, there’s an emphasis on teaching good scientific knowledge and a sound understanding of physiology and anatomy. Later on, you can select the relevant bits and tailor it to whatever you’re interested in. I’m enjoying dissection – Nottingham is one of the few universities to offer dissection on cadavers. I don’t see a better way to learn about the body.

I’m enjoying the lectures because they provide you with a medium to learn but they also give you contact with your friends. I like to stay busy, so the mix of lectures, seminars and practical works well for me. Early on in the course, you have early clinical experience with visits to hospitals and GPs, which helps reinforce the clinical perspective. A lot of the time, clinicians give you an opportunity to put what you’ve learned into practice. Another good thing about Nottingham is that during the clinical years, placements are in the teaching hospitals within the region of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire and, if it’s too far to travel, accommodation is provided for you.

I’m president of the Medical Society – it’s nice to know that I can represent the opinions of students. I enjoy arranging social events and encouraging people to come. I’m part of the Athletics Club and I did capoeira, too – I just wanted to do something completely different.”
