"Look out for opportunities and events going on around campus and make the most of them."

Course: Politics (third year)

“When I came to visit Nottingham, the open day was well organised and I was made to feel very welcome – I got a really good feeling from it.

The staff are really passionate about the subjects they teach and that really rubs off. In seminars, tutors make you think in depth about what you’re doing. Having a free choice of modules in the second and third years has been brilliant – my favourite modules have been the ones that are country-specific, like Democracy and Democratisation in Developing Countries and Russian Politics. I love finding out what goes on in other countries, and here you have the flexibility to concentrate on what interests you.

I’m on the committee of the Politics Society, which has been a good opportunity to meet people and get involved with the Students’ Union. We have lots of events, like pub quizzes and an end of year ball, and we get speakers in. In the second year, I was a social secretary for Rutland Hall – I loved the experience because it gave me a chance to make the things I did in the first year even better for new students.

I don’t have any firm plans for the future, but I’m considering working for an NGO, and helping to promote democracy abroad. I’ve looked into the civil service, too. The good thing about politics is that there are so many things you can go into.

Nottingham is a great city to study in – it’s got everything you want and it’s easy to find your way around. No matter what type of music you like, there’s always something. I’ve met so many great people, and had so many amazing experiences – there’s nothing I’d change about my time here.”
