"Enjoy your first year and get involved with everything!"

Age: 21

Course: English Studies (third year)

“What made me choose to study English at Nottingham was the fact that the course isn’t limited to literature but covers language, old English and drama too. If you come from a literature background it might be daunting, but it’s good to try something new and you might find you have a hidden talent for them. I wasn’t really expecting to like old English but found I really enjoyed it. The first year of the course gives you a really strong foundation, and then you can pursue your interests further in the second year and third years. So many different people study English and I’ve found them all to be really friendly.

There’s a lively English society, which I’ve joined. One of the best things about this university is that there are so many opportunities you don’t have at school. Freshers’ Fayre shows you just how many things there are to get involved with, from sky diving to rock climbing. You never know what you might be good at!

Nottingham is a very student-friendly city, and being here means you get the experience of a campus university and a city, which is great. There’s a strong community spirit on campus, and a healthy rivalry between halls. It is friendly, though!

An English degree from Nottingham opens the way to lots of different careers, because it helps you develop transferable skills like giving presentations, researching, critical thinking and communicating with different audiences. I’m hoping to do a postgraduate law conversion course after I graduate and my degree will really help with that.”
