"Join a society and get involved with as many activities as you can."
“I chose Nottingham because the course looked exactly what I wanted, and you didn’t have to do Greek or Latin, although I ended up doing Latin and really enjoyed it. The campus was nice too, and the halls and community spirit really appealed to me.
I love my course because you get to pick things that are exactly what you want to do – it’s fascinating! Some of my favourite modules have been Religion and the Romans, and Independent Second-Year Project. For that, you get to do something that’s not an essay – I did a graphic novel on the death of Julius Caesar.
The staff are really friendly and approachable – you can speak to them about anything. One of the lecturers, Dr Mark Bradley, helped me organise a trip to Rome, which was fantastic. You experience things that are relevant to what you’re studying and also get to know people on your course better. The staff are really keen for you to enjoy what you’re learning.
We have access to lots of resources, such as a dedicated computer room and a centre where you can view PowerPoint presentations. With several of the modules, lots of things are geared towards representations of classical civilisation, so you can watch a film like Troy or Gladiator or play a Playstation game that’s based on the Greeks or the Romans.
Classoc, the Classics Society, is brilliant for meeting people. I’m also involved with University Radio Nottingham – last year, I produced an afternoon show and this year I’m presenting and producing a Rock Show. I’m still thinking about what I want to do when I graduate, but I’m looking into the media and this experience will help me.”
