Course overview
This programme is designed for registered nurses wanting to change career and undertake a pre-registration midwifery programme. It recognises that nurses have knowledge and skills relevant to midwifery and therefore is shorter than the three-year programme. Students undertaking this shortened programme will be employees of their host Trust and will be paid a salary which is normally within the level five band of Agenda for Change.
Teaching period one
Students admitted to this programme will have provided evidence of appropriate study and practice capabilities at level one.
Teaching period two (40 weeks)
You will have the opportunity to develop analytical skills by exploring the different ways in which pregnancy and childbirth changes people’s lives. Practice placements will enable you to analyse the appropriateness of care and develop problem-solving skills. Modules studied include: Women Focused Care (1); Evidence-based Practice in Normal Childbearing; Applied Reproductive Biology;
Integrated Theory and Practice of Maternal and Neonatal Complications and Emergencies.
Teaching period three (30 weeks)
Modules reflect the complexity of independent midwifery practice alongside the midwife’s multi-faceted role as a member of different teams in maternity services. At the end of this teaching period you will be expected to function as an accountable midwife practitioner. Modules studied include Women Focused Care (2); Preparation for Professional Practice; Counselling within Midwifery; Developing Skills in Research; The Dissertation. By the end of the course
You will to be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Midwifery with honours and registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will have begun to develop the skills needed for effective management and leadership, and for teaching.
