Runic Dictionary Entry for:

bōndi

(OWN: bóndi), m. n. 'householder, legal head of a household; farmer, man of fixed abode who lives by agriculture, peasant, landowner; husband'

Definition:

The word comes from the pres. part. of the verb boa (ON búa) ‘to have one’s own household’ (AG 332–33 (§440)) and it commonly refers to a man of a certain social status (for example, Sö213 […] han uaʀ : boanti : bestr i : kili […] ‘He was the best farmer in Kil’). It can also mean ‘husband’ (usually on stones raised by women; for example, Ög93: : þiuþreiþr : reisþi : stein : þisa : eftiʀ : biurn : buta : sin : aʀ : uarþ * hauin * ‘Þiuðhæiðr raised this stone in memory of her husband who was slain’. See Eiríkur Magnússon 1888: 342; Sawyer 2000: 35–46, 108–10, 184).

The use of the word to refer to a specific group of free men varies across Scandinavia (KLNM, s.v. ‘bonde’, ‘böter’, ‘herretitel’; von See 1964: 193–95); there are, for example, no occurrences in the Viking-Age Norwegian runic material.
